Both of these are technologies that allow two or more GPUs to work together simultaneously. This article should help you understand how each works and which one might be better for you. Whether or not you actually need a multi-GPU setup is a different story, but we will come to that later.

This then improves both the quality of graphics and the overall performance that you get. SLI, in its current form, has been around sincebut its underlying technology and the hardware it comprises of has improved considerably over the years.

But once we begin to scrutinize the specifics, the two technologies begin to deviate. Some of these differences are covered below. CrossFire is can be used with GPUs that belong to the same generation.

Other factors like different clock speeds, the manufacturer itself, RAM, etc. SLI, however, has a stricter set of prerequisites; which includes having two identical graphics processors.

It limits compatibility in order to ensure consistency, whereas AMD prioritizes versatility and degree of options and has a less uniform user experience. This is useful because it frees up bandwidth from the PCIe by acting as a physical connector between cards.

By allowing them to communicate with each other over the bridge, it saves precious bandwidth on the PCIe lanes. AMD does not require a bridge. CrossFire works only in full-screen mode unless specifically engineered by developers to do otherwise. SLI is much more flexible and is compatible with windowed or borderless mode. NVIDIA also requires motherboards to be SLI certified, which is difficult for manufacturers because they must pay a fee for the license, as well as ensure that their PCIe slots to fit a set of specifications.

CrossFire compatibility is much less stringent; all that it requires of a motherboard is a pair of PCIe slots. This is why CrossFire enabled motherboards are more available at a lower cost and more easily.

Since the core concept is more or less identical for both technologies there is obviously a significant overlap in properties, as described below.

SFR, or Split Frame Rendering, means that every time a frame is rendered, each graphics card will take half of it and render it separately.

The two cards can act as one and pool their power together by taking up the top and bottom halves of the frame respectively.

Nvidia SLI vs AMD CrossFire vs Nvidia NVLink – Finding The Best Dual GPU Solution

On the other hand, AFR or Alternate Frame Rendering means that each card renders a whole frame; one renders the odd-numbered frames while the other renders the even-numbered frames. Both technologies are best suited for high resolutions and games that are graphically demanding. Even the critiques for both of these are similar because the core concept is identical. Both technologies are useful, and the one you pick will depend on your own needs. We chose Aliens vs.

Predator as a showcase for CrossFire and SLI performance because the average frame rates scaled closely to the aggregate average performance we saw in our CrossFire vs SLI scaling analysis article.

The dual-card performance doesn't provide any surprises, although we do see the low minimum frame rates with CrossFire that we experienced in the scaling analysis article. See all comments Yeah I agree. I don't get AMD's marketing on the series. One would think that the would obv performan better then the at first glance but instead it yelds less performance then the That just doesn't make any sense from a consumor standpoint.

I like where AMD is going with the series, not so much with naming, but pretty much everything else about it. Can't wait for the 's, those are going to be beasts!!!!! I think AMD did a great job with these cards. Its just sick at what performance you can get for bucks.

Super review. Nice benchmark suite! I am looking forward to the series and 22nm gpus later on for some real performance improvements. Not exactly powerhouses, but I do believe they will be great for market competition.

SLI, but more import advantages using one over the other. Mussels Moderprator Staff member. Joined Oct 6, Messages 47, 8. System Specs. I thought the major thing, except the huge bandwidth increase, is that with 2 cards you are actually doubling your VRAM and performance too, and you can go up to 6 cards Vera said:.

I'm betting it is a scaled down version for the consumer cards. R-T-B Supporter. Joined Aug 20, Messages 12, 2. Upgrayedd said:. I haven't seen anything but what about an updated NVLink? If you want to create the fastest gaming PC in the world then you want to jam as many graphics cards as you can inside it, right?

But, outside of five figure PC builds for the spoilt rich kids of Mr. When the Steam Hardware Survey was still bothering to measure such things, the percentage of PC gamers using more than a single card was buried behind the decimal points of a big fat zero.

And if you want the best single GPU these are the best graphics cards around today. The way the two technologies render game graphics is pretty consistent. You need to have the exact same GPU plugged into each of the slots to get the Scalable Link Interface for that is the full name of the acronymed beast working.

They can be from different manufacturers — Asus and Gigabyte cards can still work together — but they must use the same chip.

The potent promise of both SLI and CrossFire has been either to give you the absolute highest performance possible by taking multiple high-end graphics cards and making ludicrous-speed gaming rigs, or to give you a genuine value proposition. SLI and CrossFire have long been technologies offering diminishing returns on your investment. This is the biggest issue facing multi-GPU technologies and arguably the reason for it decline, and potentially imminent death, on the gaming front.

Interest is definitely waning on the mainstream side for Nvidia, with it nixing support for SLI on its most popular cards, the GTXleaving only its higher-end cards available to pair up for ultra-expensive, showpiece machines.

Having a specific multi-GPU abstraction layer built into DX12 means that it should be more straight-forward for devs to support more than one graphics card in a single PC. When testing the same RX s with Doom in its Vulkan habitat we were actually getting poorer gaming frame rates from two cards than just a single one. The scarcity and pricing of graphics cards has made it almost impossible picking up a single affordable GPU, let alone two of the damned things.

You can get a pair of mainstream Radeons to play nice and deliver massively improved frame rates in a decent number of modern games, though whether that will remain the case all depends on the devs. Back to Top. The first generation of CrossFire had two main problems. The second major problem was that you needed an external cable to connect the video cards, as you can see in Figure 7. Figure 7: First generation CrossFire cards were connected through an external cable.

Friday, April 17, Hardware Secrets. Home Video SLI vs. CrossFire can use the following modes to render images: Scissors: This mode is similar to the SFR Split Frame Rendering from SLI, but since you can hook two different video cards under CrossFire, the half of the screen rendered by the fastest video card would be done first and the card would have to wait for the slower can to finish its job to go ahead to the next frame.

This would make the faster video card work at the same speed of the slower one. To solve this problem, Crossfire enables dynamic load balancing, i. Load balancing is also used here, so the fastest card will get more tiles to render than the slowest card if you use two different video cards.

Alternate Frame Rendering AFR : this mode is identical to the SLI mode with the same name, where while one video card is rendering the current frame, the other card is rendering the next frame. You can increase AA anti-aliasing up to x14 under this mode.Want to learn more about our various default specs for workstations and gaming PCs?

This is what you see in the picture. To get technical SLI is an algorithm of parallel processing for computer graphics, meant to increase the processing power available for graphics.

SLI setups include 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, and Quad. This is due to scaling, which does best in two-GPU setups not necessarily two-card setups. Adding more GPUs allows you to get more performance, but the gains diminish rapidly. This means having a powerful CPU to keep feeding the GPU information, as a lack of information will result in lag, stuttering, poor quality, and potentially crashing. Back to 4-way vs Quad SLI. As you might think, Quad-SLI scales better, as there are less cards to manage.

More cards means more work to be done, and more room for error. Top Flight Computers designs high-performance custom-built computers.

SLI and CrossfireX usually use AFR alternate frame rendering which makes your gpus draw frames in turns, let's say one draws all the odd frames and the other all the even frames. Makes perfect sense. From what I understand, the two cards copy or mirror the vram so they can synchronise with one another. There is a simplified explanation. If calculation that are being rendered in GPU2, the variable needs to passed back to GPU1 in the same video memory location. If both video cards have independent memory management there will be situations where it will accidentally overwrite the data when exchanging data.
